NZ Music Awards Finalists Announced

Congratulations to all the musicians & artists who were nominated for the New Zealand Music Awards this week. Representing Dirty among the swathe of local legends is none other than our own P-Money[Everything] & Bulletproof[Soundtrack to Forever], who are competing for the same award, best Electronica album. The guys are up against a solid effort from live drum & bass act Shapeshifter, so this award promises to be a tight one.

Also representing Dirty in the nominations is local hip-hop heavyweight David Dallas, a strong contender for the Best Urban/Hip-Hop album with his exceptional 'Something Awesome'. Our boy is moving to New York in a matter of weeks, so if he takes this one out, it would be a great send off. This man is on fire!

Maen As III feat. US rapper Buff1 performing his first NZ show

MEAN AS III
Featuring BUFF1 direct from Ann Arbor, Michigan
DJs P-Money, CheKamikaze, and Fire & Ice
Hosted by DAVID DALLAS
Friday 27 August, 2010 @ KHUJA

Talented US rapper Buff1 (Ann Arbor, Michigan) will perform his first show on New Zealand soil at the third installment of popular Auckland hip hop night “Mean As”. Rapper David Dallas will host and perform alongside Buff1 at Mean As III. Sounds will be provided by P-Money, CheKamikaze, and production duo Fire & Ice (David Dallas, Scribe, PNC). Mean As III will take place at Khuja (536 Queen Street) on the evening of Friday 27 August, 2010.

Buff1 first entered New Zealand hip hop fans consciousness when he collaborated with local rap hero David Dallas on 2009’s “Front To Back Remix”(the b-side to Dallas’s popular single “I Get The Feelin”). Buff1 and David Dallas later performed the remix together at the prestigious SXSW 2010 Music Festival in Austin, Texas. A blazing performance that was documented by influential hip hop blog and tastemaker The Smoking Section.

Buff1’s roots lie with the Ann Arbor rap crew known as the Athletic Mic League (AML), with whom he released two studio albums Sweats and Kicks, and Jungle Gym Jungle (DJ Haircut from AML is the musical genius now known as Mayer Hawthorne). He broke out into his solo career in 2007 and has since recorded two full-length albums, the acclaimed Pure and There’s Only One. His projects featured notable Detroit hip hop artists including Mayer Hawthorne, Black Milk, Guilty Simpson, and Elzhi (Slum Village); and production from Black Milk, Wajeed and Mr. Porter. He also released a mixtape in 2009 entitled It’s A 1derful Life which features David Dallas’s “Front To Back Remix”. Buff1 is currently in the studio with DJ Rhettmatic (World Famous Beat Junkies) finishing up their collaborative project, Crown Royale.

An accomplished live performer, Buff1 has shared the stage with some of the biggest acts in hip-hop (Eminem, Mos Def, De La Soul, Slum Village, Jurassic 5, Dead Prez, Talib Kweli, Little Brother and Ghostface Killah), and has toured extensively throughout Europe, and the US.

Mean As is a club night dedicated to quality hip hop, R&B, funk and soul music. Contrary to popular belief, some people enjoy Slum Village and Snoop Dogg or listen to Erykah Badu as well as The Dream. Disillusioned with the various club nights focusing on either end of the commercial/conscious spectrum the Mean As Mob set out to fill the void. With a foot overground and underground, Mean As is about playing good music - period. Whether old, new, obscure, or mainstream.

Strictly the mean shit!
